چکیده

The beam transverse emittance control and preservation in all the acceleration chain from the proton source to the 7TeV colliding beams is fundamental for ensuring high luminosity runs at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). This paper aims at discussing the emittance measurement methods and present status in the acceleration stages from the Proton Synchrotron Booster (PSB) injection at p=50Mev/c to the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) beam extraction to the LHC at p=450Gev/c. This includes acceleration in the Proton Synchrotron (PS) and all the beam transfers from one accelerator to the other. A short description and status of the LHC diagnostics and methods is covered.

Damping of Coherent Oscillations

Damping of coherent oscillations by feedback is straightforward in principle. It has been a vital ingredient for the safe operation of accelerators since a long time [1,2]. The increasing dimensions and beam intensities of the new generation of hadron colliders impose unprecedented demands on the performance of future systems. The arguments leading to the specification of a transverse feedback ...

EUROPEAN ORGANIZATION FOR NUCLEAR RESEARCH European Laboratory for Particle Physics LHC PILOT BUNCHES FROM THE CERN PS BOOSTER

For the first commissioning phase of the LHC, a single proton bunch is required. The production of this so-called “LHC pilot bunch” will follow a different scheme than the one of the nominal LHC proton bunch train. Both the transverse and the longitudinal LHC bunch characteristics should already be established in the PS Booster. The parameter space for the LHC pilot bunch spans a factor 66 in b...

Transverse Performance of the Proton Beam Delivered by the Cern Ps Complex for the Future Lhc

The performance of the CERN LHC will depend heavily on the high-brightness beam delivered by the injector chain. In 1999, after completion of the programme of hardware upgrades of the PS Complex, a major effort was devoted to producing a proton beam with the nominal transverse characteristics foreseen for LHC operation. This paper focuses on the different beam dynamics issues encountered during...

European Organization for Nuclear Research Cern – Accelerators and Technology Sector

For several years, a large variety of beams have been prepared in the LHC injectors, such as single-bunch and multi-bunch beams, with 25 ns, 50 ns and 75 ns bunch spacings, nominal and intermediate intensities per bunch. As compared to the nominal LHC beam (i.e. with nominal bunch intensity and 25 ns spacing) the other beams can be produced with lower transverse emittances. Beams of low transve...

Transverse emittance measurement devices for CERN injectors, present and future

The measurement of the transverse beam emittance is essential in any particle accelerator. This paper describes the problems of transverse emittance measurement for the new H LINAC being built at CERN as a replacement of the existing proton LINAC.
